09 September 2010- Body shapes play a vital role in fashion. You can bring a lot of change in your appearance if you know what to wear as per your body shape. Before that you should know what are the different body shapes and in which category you fall into. There are four common body shapes and most women fall into one of those body shapes. These four body shapes are discussed below. The point to be noted is that these are general shapes, and there are some women who may fall in between two types.

  • The Apple Body Shape: This shape is associated with an upper body larger than the lower body. Women in the apple body shape gain weight around the waistline. Women would be heavier on the upper torso, with bigger bust line and larger waists as well.
  • The Pear Body Shape: This shape is also known as bell or triangle shape. This body shape has a smaller upper body, narrow shoulders with more weight in the hips, thighs, and legs. Women who belong to this category would have a round figure.
  • The Hourglass Body Shape: This is one body shape which every woman desires to have. This body shape has a defined waist, curvy figure, i.e., curvy upper and lower body with slim hips. A proportionate body shape
  • The Rectangle/Tube Body Type: This is basically a straight body type, with fewer defined curves. Waist, hips, and breast measurements may be more or less similar to each other and weight gain is evenly distributed. Women have an athletic figure in this body shape with few curves.

Fashion Tips for Apple Shaped Body

Do's

Apple shapes can show off fabulous legs or boobs. So dress up to show your best. De-emphasize the waist and the broad shoulders. Empire line and longer length tops will flatter your figure. V-neck tops with deep neckline can create a more elongated look. Wrap tops and belted waist jackets can give the look of a smaller waist. Go for low-rise, flat front jeans and pants having flared leg styles with slimming tops. Show off great legs with shorter skirts with tunic style tops.

Dont's

Avoid wearing pleated or tiered skirts and short boxy jackets

Do's

If you have a heavy bottom then you are in the pear or triangle shape. But you have fabulous shoulders and top half. So you need to create an appearance of a more balanced top and lower body. So wear something that broadens and adds dimension to shoulders like wider necklines tops and blouses with patterns that draws attention away from hips and thighs. You can also wear light or brightly colored tops with darker bottoms to give a more balanced appearance. Go for boot cut jeans to give a slimmer look in legs. Wear A-line or asymmetric skirts. Wear short jackets that fall just above the hip.

Dont's

Avoid tube, pencil skirts, very tight-fitting dresses which will only emphasize your hips and behind.

Fashion Tips for Rectangle Body Shape

Do's

The athletic body shapes have slender bodies with no curves. Women in this shape always have the desire to create the illusion of more curves. You can go for scoop neck or v-neck tops. Wear jackets with defined waists. Straight or flared jeans looks good. Try blouses and tops that have detail around the bust area for shape.

Dont's

Avoid wearing low rise jeans and pants. This can make your torso look too long. Don't wear sheath dresses. Prefer styles with more shape instead.

Do's

You have the best figure. So you have the option of wearing clothes that show off you curves, your narrow waist. To create a create a longer, leaner look, choose clothes that de-emphasizes bust and hips. Wear clothes that are waist-defining like wrap dresses, belted jackets, high-waisted pants with a slight flare for balance, fitted skirts, tailored blouses to show off the waist, your curves. Prefer monochromatic colors for balance. Wear thin, lightweight fabrics clothes.

Dont's

Avoid wearing loose fitting, baggy clothes like a jumper.
