History of Women Tunic
Tunic was the common masculine garment
of greco-roman civilization worn by men and women. It was worn by
citizens and non-citizens alike. Tunics lost its popularity in mid 19`s
but by the early 20th century, it had again gain its place. From the
ancient Greeks through the Romans, and medieval times, tunics
represented an easily made, highly comfortable, garment that could be
worn by all sectors of society.
Types of Women Tunic
Originally, there were two basic styles
of female tunics: peplos and chitons both made of either linen or silk,
specially worn by Russian women. Both of these were made of two
rectangular pieces of cloth partially sewn together on both sides; the
open sections at the top were then folded down in the front and back. It
was pulled overhead and fastened at shoulders with two large pins,
forming a sleeveless dress. Then it was belted or tied.
Nowadays, they are available in variety of designs. The various types
of tunics are usually based on the lengths and sleeves. There are short
length, mid length and long length tunics that go very well with jeans
and skirts. Similarly, the sleeves can be full sleeves or short sleeves
or half sleeves.

Fashion magazines refer this style as Russian Blouse suits. There appear
to have been three different basic styles of blouse tunic suits:

- Russian
- Buster Brown blouse suits.
Necks, cuffs and hem are often highly decorated, or finished in a
contrasting colored fabric. Tunics can have almost any sleeve length or
neck line style (scoop, vee, square or keyhole). The lower part can be
straight (Norman) or flared (Viking, Saxon).

Tunics are made in many different fabrics, colors, and levels of
decoration depending on a person's position and wealth. The prints cover
a wide range like of big-bold prints-especially animal inspired prints,
floral prints, abstract prints, polka dotted and many more. There are
plain self colored tunics with stripes or bordered ends or sides.
Embroidery, applique work, bandhini prints, sequins work etc. are all
available designs of tunics-the choice is endless.
