History of T-shirt
The concept of T-shirt originated in the
USA during World War I. During the war, the US soldiers in woolen
uniforms perspired a lot, while they observed that the European soldiers
wearing light cotton undershirts, also known as T-shirts were quite
comfortable. Owing to their comfort, T-shirts soon became popular in the
US. The design of the garment gave it the name "T-shirt".
However, the modern T-shirts were designed in 1932, when the officials
from the University of south California Trojans football team wanted an
economical, sweat absorbing and comfortable undergarment for football
players. Thus the T-shirts became very popular among athletes and
shortly became a rage among students.
After World War II, T-shirts became popular in the Civilian life and
were worn by people of all age groups, especially youngsters.
T-shirts were originally worn as undershirts. This still occurs, but
T-shirts are now also frequently worn as the only piece of clothing on
the top half of the body (other than a bra).
T-Shirt Trends
The length of a normal T-shirt typically
extends to the waist. However, there is one fashion trend of wearing
over-sized T-shirts. Although one fashion is for "oversized"
T-shirts, namely in modern hip hop fashion (a perfect example of this
can be clearly seen in the song, White Tee, by Dem Franchize Boyz). A
more recent trend in women's clothing involves tight-fitting "cropped"
T-shirts that are short enough to reveal the lower abdomen including the
belly button.
