
Sarong
is a long attire consisting of a length of printed or plain cloth
wrapped around the waist. It is a traditional skirt like garment that is
worn by people in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Pacific islands. Sarong
is a very common casual wear at home for Malay men and women. But with
varying names and uses it is popular in south Asia and south east Asia
too.
The word sarong is originated from the Indian word Saree. Sarong
consists of a single fabric, about two-and-half yard long and one yard
wide. Sarong is often worn as skirt by both men and women Sarong is also
used as other type of clothing like shawls, baby carrier, wall hanging,
upper body clothing.
Regional Variation
Sarong is known with varying names across the globe. In Eastern Africa
it is known as kanga or kikoi and usually is made of brightly colored
cotton. In Mauritius they are called pareos. In Malaysia and Indonesia
it is known as kain sarung. In Philippines sarong are known as malong.
Across the Indian sub content, it is widespread in south Indian state
of Kerala, known as mundu. It is used only by men in this part of world.
In Tamilnadu it is known as lungi. In Punjab it is known as malayee when
used by men and as gamchha when used by women.
How to Wear it
Sarong is usually used as the lower costume wear everywhere. But it is
also used as top, shawl etc. Wearing a sarong depends on many features
including its use, regional variance and the purpose.
Sarong as a Top
Wrap the sarong above the chest and tie it. You can leave this style
with the gaps open over swim wear or you may bind it with some safety
pins to secure it.
Sarong as Skirt
Wrap the sarong around your waist or hips. Pick the top two corners.
Make a tie by pulling the free ends with your fist in opposite
directions. Now make a knot and pull the ends vertically and then
horizontally. Knot again for secure.
Fabrics
The variety of fabrics used in sarongs cover a wide range. The cotton
based sarongs are the common and frequently used. These adds to the
comfort level of the wearer.
At some places, the fabric of the sarong is generally quite light,
often rayon, and it may include features like decorative fringing on two
